HAMMER

Scenario

You’re in your garage doing a bit of carpentry when an intruder surprises you.

What do you do?

Tactics

Tomahawks have long been used with great success in hand-to-hand combat. Hammers, while not nearly as effective when it comes to cutting, can be used with similar methodology. Try the following tactics to defend yourself:

If you’re facing one opponent, a strike with either the claw or the face of the hammer will suffice. However, if you’re facing multiple attackers, you may want to begin your defense by striking with just the face. A claw strike has the potential of becoming lodged in your enemy and getting stuck, preventing you from engaging the others quickly.

Considering most hammers have a decent amount of heft, any part of the body makes a good target. But before you swing, you should first decide whether you want the blow to simply wound your enemy or be mortal. If wounding is your intention, avoid head strikes at all costs, as they could easily kill your adversary. While the skull is strong, hammer blows—especially from someone in the midst of an adrenaline rush (which you most likely will be)—can easily reduce a skull to powder, thereby destroying its contents, the brain.

Use the tip of the handle as a bludgeon. Focus particularly on your attacker’s fingers and toes, as well as other fragile targets.

If the handle becomes dislodged from the hammer’s business end, use it to fill out your hand for a punch (like a roll of quarters), or like a baton for jabs to the throat, solar plexus, ribs, and groin.

By itself, the handle can also be effective when pressed against pressure points or, if it’s heavy enough, as a sap—a flat (or reasonably flat) lead-filled leather pouch or leather-covered metal/lead plank or stave, often 6–9 inches in length, used primarily as an impact weapon for head strikes with the goal of dazing someone or knocking him unconscious. When wielding the hammer in this way, be sure to target the back of the head or base of the skull.

If you can get behind your adversary, the hammer can be used as a come-along device. Hold the handle with the business end facing down and the claw forward and curling upward, then jam the hammer between your foe’s legs and pull up, digging the claw into your foe’s groin or the area between his genitals and anus. It doesn’t need to break skin to be effective. With the hammer positioned in this manner, you can lead your enemy virtually anywhere you’d like.
